About Us

The Division of Trauma, Burns, Critical and Acute Care, led by Dr. Robert Winchell, MD, FACS, is a part of the Department of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. We provide vitally needed services for New York City while offering critically ill patients a unique blend of expertise and compassionate care from highly skilled surgeons. The trauma center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center — ranked the # 1 Hospital in New York and the #4 Hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report —is an American College of Surgeons designated Level I adult and a Level II pediatric trauma center. This designation recognizes our ability to provide the highest quality of care, especially in critical and complex cases for NYC and the surrounding region.

Our division faculty, board certified by the American College of Surgeons, are part of the multidisciplinary Center for Hernia and Gallbladder Surgery, which provides the latest state-of-the-art techniques in hernia and gallbladder surgery. Patients are scheduled with one of our surgeons, either in the office or via a virtual telehealth visit within 24-48 hours of initial request.  Additionally, our surgeons provide the highest quality comprehensive general surgery care in the region. Common surgical procedures we perform include:  Appendectomy – Removal of diseased appendix, Cholecystectomy – Removal of the gallbladder for gallstones or inflammation, Minimal Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery – done for many problems including gallstones, appendicitis, inguinal and abdominal hernias, colon problems, and abdominal pain, Pilonidal Cystectomy –Removing a cyst near your tailbone and Wound Care – Comprehensive treatment to patients suffering from acute and chronic wounds

The division also houses the William Randolph Hearst Burn Center — world-renowned for its expertise in burn care and research.  We also work closely with surgeons from the Hospital for Special Surgery, ranked the #1 hospital for orthopedics in the country.  The faculty of the Division of Trauma, Burns, Critical and Acute Care are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise and skill. Many hold national and international positions in their specialty societies and are considered leaders in their field.

As part of our commitment to world-class healthcare, our surgeons also conduct research to find new and better ways to treat patients in critical care situations. With two competitive fellowships in the division, we are also committed to training and developing future healthcare leaders in the field.
